Hortons Estate Limited has commenced the second phase of a project to repair the façade of an historic city centre hotel.
Works have begun on necessary repairs to the Lower Temple Street and Stephenson Street elevation of Birmingham’s Macdonald Burlington Hotel.
Damaged stonework and leadwork will be repaired and replaced, with brickwork repointed and the façade repainted.
Hortons’ has already made a significant investment in repairing one section of the Lower Temple Street and New Street façade, which was completed last year.
The latest project will be led by Hortons and its chosen contractor Prestec UK, and is expected to take up to twelve months to complete.
James Fox of Hortons said: “We are very pleased to have secured local authority approval to commence the next phase of works at The Macdonald Burlington Hotel.
“We have already made good progress in repairing part of the historic exterior of this much loved building, during which we gained knowledge and expertise that will support the delivery of these works. Our intention is to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible, and look forward to unveiling the restored exterior next year.”
The Burlington is a mixed-use period building with hotel, retail and accommodation set over seven floors. It was originally built between 1867-75, and is said to be Birmingham’s first railway hotel.
