Hospice thanks Hortons’ for charity canal walk donation

A Birmingham-based charity has thanked Hortons’ Estate Ltd for raising thousands of pounds to support vital end of life care services in the West Midlands.

The company has raised more than £11,000 for St Mary’s and John Taylor Hospices, now known as The Hospice Charity Partnership, following a series of sponsored walks.

Three teams from Hortons’ walked more than 100 miles along sections of Birmingham’s canal network, with employees taking to the towpaths of the Birmingham Main Line, Birmingham Old Main Line, Birmingham & Fazeley and Grand Union canals.

Their efforts were supplemented by a fourth team who followed the 2.5 mile ‘Walking with The Snowman Trail’ across Birmingham City Centre.

The intrepid walkers – who each sported Christmas jumpers during the festive challenge – have attracted generous donations from Hortons’ colleagues, shareholders, suppliers and occupiers via a Just Giving campaign.

Charlotte Dowling, Senior Community and Corporate Fundraising Manager at The Hospice Charity Partnership, said that the total funds raised could cover the cost of more than 100 home visits by a nurse or a one-week stay in an inpatient unit.

“All of us at The Hospice Charity Partnership are incredibly grateful for the fantastic teams at Hortons’ support, who have raised vital funds for our charity,” she said.

“It costs £15,055,467 to run both hospice sites per year and 40 per cent of our income comes solely from voluntary donations and fundraising. These generous donations allow us to continue providing expert palliative and end of life care to people across Birmingham and Sandwell, a huge thank you to Hortons’.”

Jane Phillips from Hortons’ said “When we decided to embark on a canal walk, we knew that covering so many miles in one day may stretch our stamina, especially when some of the group incurred many extra miles having taken the wrong direction! We thoroughly enjoyed the event, especially knowing that our efforts were for such a good cause.

“The nurses of The Hospice Charity Partnership carry out vital work in our communities in delivering expert palliative and end of life care services for patients and their families. We’re incredibly thankful to everyone that has supported our team charity challenge this year.”
